History
| |
Beaux-Arts style with a warm inviting ambiance to welcome visitors
from all over the world. European feel. Designed by Trowbridge and Livingston,
$55 million dollars was originally spent in the hotel's creation in 1904 to construct
a hotel with marble floors, crystal chandeliers and to furnish it with antique
tapestries, oriental rugs, antique Louis XV furniture and a library of 3,000 leather-bound
gold tooled classic and current books. Site of the hotel was a residential neighborhood.
The St. Regis was the tallest building in the area when John Jacob Astor IV broke
ground. It has been the center for New York's civic, business, and social life
for most of the 20th century. Headquarters of the original "400", the elite social
group designated by Colonel Astor's mother. The St. Regis was where a bartender
introduced a cocktail called "The Red Snapper" soon renamed the Bloody Mary, at
the King Cole Bar.

Lespinasse, the beautifully appointed and highly acclaimed signature
restaurant of The St. Regis, is a fitting showplace for Chef Christian Delouvrier's
distinctive cooking style "cuisine de terre" or cuisine of the earth, a regional
south western France style of cooking. Lespinasse represents old world comfort
at its most luxurious. Awarded four stars by the New York Times and bestows AAA's
five Diamond Award and Mobil's five Star Award
Astor Court For
afternoon tea, the Astor Court lounge is a picture of perfection. This fashionable
meeting place provides drinks, light snacks and decadent desserts, all served
under exquisite raised ceilings adorned with trompe l'oeil clouds and otherworldly
murals. When the harpist entertains, it's just this side of heaven. Maxfield
Parish's beloved and famed mural is the focal point of this whimsical, yet sophisticated
lounge. Warm cherrywood and nineteenth century French tub chairs create the perfect
setting for a cool drink. Try the Red Snapper Cocktail, which originated here
but later became the Bloody Mary. | | Location
